The COP26 conference in Glasgow concluded this month with nations around the world taking action to prevent climate change. Here at Laid Back snacks, we’re not only protecting this planet for our future, but also the fact that we play a role in the movement of reaching carbon neutral by 2050.

Why did we become Climate Neutral Certified?

Environmental sustainability is at the core of our decision making as a company. Which is why we are proud to announce that we’re officially Climate Neutral Certified, working with Climate Neutral to strategically offset our carbon emissions and accelerate our journey of becoming net zero.

How do you become Climate Neutral Certified

Being climate neutral certified involves three steps: measuring, offsetting and reducing our carbon footprint. We work with Climate Neutral to investigate and audit our operation’s total annual carbon footprint. For example, the fuel, electricity and emissions used in order to get our products to your home.

Once we identify the amount of emissions we emit, we proceed to purchase carbon credits, equivalent to the amount we emit. These credits go towards supporting projects that help us remove carbon from the atmosphere. This includes projects that not only help remove carbon generating activities like deforestation but also support other social and environmental benefits like solar and wind energy generation.

Last, we focus on our long term goal of reducing our future emissions. From tackling our waste to our energy consumption, we’re on a mission to maximize our reduction across our activities.

This includes:

  1. Choosing electricity instead of natural gas wherever possible in our operation.
  2. Using ground transportation as much as possible using carbon neutral couriers.
  3. Source our ingredients locally in order to reduce the distance the food travels.

What else are you doing to be more sustainable?

1. Packaging

We ensure that everything we ship to our customers is either made from recycled materials, recyclable or edible.

Snack bags

We use #4 LDPE recyclable material for our snack bag packaging, allowing us to fully eliminate single-use plastics in our products. Your snack bag can be recycled at store drop-off bins or your local community recycling depot.

Snack boxes

Our snacks are packaged in certified FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) boxes.

This certification ensures that the harvesting of products does not affect the forest’s biodiversity, productivity, and ecological processes, that products are harvested in accordance with long-term management plans, and that operations are not generating profit at the expense of the forest, ecosystem, or affected communities.

Up to 60% of our corrugate is post-consumer recycled, which means, not only are our boxes recyclable, they’re also made using recycled materials.

2. Sourcing

We adhere to a strict local hiring and sourcing policy in which we source locally when possible. We have committed to sourcing more than 50% of our total non-labour expenses from within our local community. While this bolsters the local economy, it also protects the environment by reducing shipping emissions. In cases where local sourcing isn’t possible, we ship using the most efficient methods available (ocean freight and train) in order to minimize emissions.

3. Shipping

Our subscription boxes are shipped using Canada Post (CP), which has the largest fleet of hybrid vehicles in Canada and is now introducing electric vehicles, as well as, vehicles that run on low-carbon fuels like compressed natural gas.

To the future

We’re thrilled to be in good company with this year’s Climate Neutral Certified brands. We believe in Climate Neutral’s mission of taking action now to solve a problem that we understand to be an urgent threat. We’re glad you’re with us for the journey. Let’s work together to tackle climate change faster.
