It’s safe to say that if you’re still working toward your New Year’s resolution at the beginning of February, then you’re on-track to succeed – or at least doing better than most.

Resolutions are what we love to love when the countdown is on, bubbly is flowing and our hopes are high for the coming year. The problem is they can be a real challenge when it comes time to start working on them. Success rates are dismal with just 27% of Canadians keeping their New Year’s resolutions for any length of time.

But what about the folks who mean business? What’s their secret to successfully achieving their goals?

We reached out to the Laid Back Snacks (formerly Naked Snacks) community (that’s you!) for advice on keeping your resolution and achieving a happy and healthy 2017. Here’s what you had to say:

1. Better together

Working through your resolution with a buddy, family member, team or coach is the way to go. They’ll help you stay accountable, encouraged and on-track to success (and vice versa).

2. ‘Low and slow’

Resolutions are an ultra-marathon, not a 10m sprint. Set small, achievable goals and gradually increase the difficulty. Pretty soon you’ll be sailing! (Perhaps even literally.)

3. Reward yo’self

Achieving your goal is only part of it. Be sure to recognize your achievement with rewards that will keep you encouraged and motivated (but won’t set you back). You’ve earned that gold star!

4. Keep calm and carry on

Cheesy but true. Can’t resist that piece of office cake? Choose to watch Netflix instead of practicing piano? Forgive yourself and carry on with your journey. If it continues to happen, take it as a sign that something’s not working and make an adjustment. Don’t give up!

5. Be colourful

Let your creative juices flow! What’s going to get you up in the morning and keep you going through the day? How can you make your resolution as present, convenient and manageable as possible?

6. Set yourself up to succeed

Be SMART about your goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely). Nothing will kill a resolution faster than feeling discouraged, overwhelmed and hungry right off the bat.

7. And most importantly?

Life changes are always hard, but that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed. It just takes a little fine tuning and a whole lot of motivation. Make 2017 the year you keep your New Year’s resolution – we’re here to help.
