It’s always a bit of a letdown when the holidays are over. The decorations have been put away, the New Year’s ball has dropped and the next long weekend feels like it’s months away.

You’re not alone if you feel a bit deflated this time of year.

In fact, 2 to 3% of Canadians suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that sets in every fall and winter with the longer, darker days.

But for many of us, the post-holiday blahs can be attributed to a simple loss of merriment now that the holidays are over and spring is taking foreverrrr to arrive.

So next time you find yourself cursing the gray skies, try one (or all) of these 6 ways to spice things up this winter. Before you know it the roads will be bare and the blossoms will be out!

Discover what gets you out of bed

And no, we don’t just mean “the alarm.” What gets you jumping into your slippers and excited for the day?! Try a new breakfast, sneak a bit of hot chocolate in your coffee, watch an episode of your favourite sitcom – whatever it is, make it part of your daily gig and we promise you’ll start feeling good about those wake-up calls. You might even forget that it’s still dark outside.

Set yourself a goal

There’s no better time to start something new than the beginning of the year! Maybe you’ve been meaning to start a journal or tackle that DIY Pinterest board. Or perhaps you’re feeling ambitious and want to take-on a new habit, like actually drinking 8 glasses of water a day. Go for it! Take it day by day. And don’t worry if you miss one day (or five), just pick up where you left off.

The subtle art of distraction

Our parents did it to us when we were bored on a roadtrip. Why should life be any different as an adult? If it feels like the month is dragging on, distract yourself! Make time for something you love guilt free. Read a book, host a karaoke night, see a movie in theatres, or heck, build a pillow fort! Enjoy the down-time before sports, Spring Break and spring cleaning takes over.

Schedule some self-care

Nothing says you need to wait ‘til girls night (or guys night) to break out those face masks you got in your stocking. Self-care isn’t just for when you have time – you gotta make time! Try choosing a day each week dedicated to doing something that makes you feel happy and whole, like that massage you’ve been wanting to get. Think of it like a well-deserved, totally luxurious date-night for one.
